    ACF Theme Customizer

Is it possible to use ACF in combination with WP’s theme customizer? I am debating whether to use the Option Framework Plugin (https://github.com/devinsays/options-framework-plugin/) or ACF, as I am using ACF for everything else.

How do I remove this plugin?

    Hey everyone,

When I look at my plugins under “Advanced Custom Fields” there is the usual “deactivate|Edit” buttons.

    But I can’t deactivate it!

When I click on “deactivate” I get a message at the top of the page that says “plugin deactivated”.

But it does not appear to be deactivated. It’s not gray, it still says “deactivate|edit” not “Activate” – there is no “delete” button.

And – I have no idea where this plugin came from – I didn’t install it. I think it got installed automatically with a theme. But I’m back to using my own theme and it’s still here and I’m not sure, but I think it’s causing a conflict with “Metro Menu Customizer” – my menu’s are disappearing and this is the only plugin I can’t deactivate to test with.

    Help! ๐Ÿ˜‰

    Thanksโ€ฆ

  • Is there any solution for this as well? I was trying to create relation between the custom post types. But the post that I assign to be displayed in the certain post editor, the fiels appears without the content/assigned-posts.

  • Thank you oncecoupled. This drove me crazy as well. The problem does still occur in Pro 5.12. As a tip for others: In the customizer widgets appear, which don’t show up on the frontend. We actually had to delete and then add the widgets again for them to appear on the frontend.

  • I’m seeing the same issue on multiple sites/environments as well, a workaround that actually worked for me was going to Appearance → Customize → Widgets instead of the dedicated Appearance → Widgets screen. It’s not ideal since the Widgets sidebar is so narrow in the Customizer, but at least it’s possible to save ACF block changes there!

  • We are having the same issue on multiple sites. As a temporary fix, we are able to get the widgets to show up on the frontend by editing/publishing them via the customizer.

  • I’m getting this issue too when adding blocks in the Customizer. “Uncaught TypeError: e.data is undefined” happening within acf-pro-blocks.min.js.

Edit: I didn’t realize how old this thread was. For reference, I’m using 5.9.9. I don’t think I had this issue in the previous version.

  • Actually as a coincidence, it happened to me today, but the culprit was a function from my theme. My homemade theme has a script that displays the page load time, and amount of RAM WordPress consumes, and this displays at the bottom of the footer, both on the front end and back end. While this function was turned on from the Customizer, Gutenberg refuses to save (publish) posts/pages, not even in any mode (publish, draft or preview). Turning it off, everything works fine.

Therefore, since you don’t have any other plugins installed (besides ACF Pro), try changing the theme, to one of the default ones maybe, and see if that fixes your issue. If not, the only advice I can give you, is to save your permalinks again (just in case, although I don’t think this is relevant here), and clear your browser cache, just in case there is some script from the cache causing this error.

Good luck. BTW, my testing environments:

    1. Xampp WP 5.0.1 with bunch of plugins, ACF made blocks, on Windows 7 Pro machine, with 4GB RAM, 128MB available for WordPress, php 7.2

    2. Godaddy Shared Hosting – php 5.6, and I want to believe 64MB RAM (I can be wrong for the RAM!).

  • This is because the ACF module does not integrate with the WP customizer themes.
I believe that answers your inquiry.

  • It is my understanding that the entire reason for using acf is to avoid having to use customizer. With ACF you can create much nicer options pages with better permissions and usability that customizer has ever had.

  • I am also interested if ACF can add options to the WordPress customizer.

  • Changes to widget content in the customizer aren’t updating in the live preview for me either… Was this fix implemented or do I need to use a workaround like the one mentioned in the following post:
    https://support.advancedcustomfields.com/forums/topic/acf-pro-fields-in-widget-and-customizer/

  • As WordPress emphasizes more and more on the use of the built-in Customizer, I would really like to know what ACF’s plans are for its integration with Customizer in the near future!
    Regards, an ACF fanboy ๐Ÿ™‚

  • I would really like to know what the plans are for ACF and Customizer integration, this very much seems like the way to go for the future…

  • I submitted a new ticket and Elliot replied that he’ll consider adding it in a future version. ๐Ÿ™‚

I was also playing around with the new WordPress code editor in the Customizer and it works pretty good, I love that there’s also support for real-time code linting.

    Hi James

    An Update!

After further investigation i see that fields in widgets are stored as options in the wp_options table. I was able to pull the values using the following code:

    echo get_option('widget_' . $args['widget_id'] . '_field_name');

The only thing is that field value is not changing live in Customizer, only after i hit the “Save & Publish” button and refreshing the page on the front end.

    More work needed with get_option().

  • @hube2 Yes, dividing into more page options would be my solution, but now I choose to use kirki that is a tool more friendly to users, it uses Theme Customizer API for this kind of task.

    Thanks for the information guys!

  • Thank you for taking the time to help me report customizer bugs! Submitting ticket now.

    Thanks again!

  • Hi @mrbutlertron

Thanks for the video. I see the issue now. I thought you were talking about the repeater row itself.

I’m not sure why, but it seems that WordPress only show the first row on the preview. Because customizer is fairly new, I’m afraid it’s not fully tested yet. Could you please open a new ticket from the following link so this issue can be passed directly to the plugin author? Here’s the link: https://support.advancedcustomfields.com/new-ticket. Also, please explain the issue again in that ticket.

    Thank you very much!

  • Hey, I’m working with an extremely bare bones theme I created just for testing ACF Fields Types with the customizer. The only plugin that is installed and activated is ACF Pro 5.3.7. Here is a quick video of the issue I’m running into:

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/a356wvg9nwdgo1n/acf-repeater-widget.mov?dl=0

Are you testing a custom widget, or a core widget modified with the dynamic_sidebar_params filter?

    Thanks!

  • Hmmm, looking a bit deeper it might be possible. See https://developer.wordpress.org/themes/advanced-topics/customizer-api/#custom-setting-types

It appears one can use customize_update_$setting->type and customize_preview_$setting->type actions to build a custom setting object that saves/previews data other than theme_mods and wp_options. I haven’t looked to see if customize.php gives us the post object or if we’d have to build a custom query but it looks promising. I’m very surprised there is little mentioned of this on the webz.

  • This is due to lack of core capability in the wp customizer. To my knowledge, the customizer currently is only built to work with theme options, theme mods (widgets and menus). Hopefully post objects will come.

You might look at this. I haven’t used it but it appears to allow for ACF fields to be added to widgets in which can be manipulated via the customizer. https://gist.github.com/fabrizim/9c0f36365f20705f7f73

  • +1 on this as well. I’ve been using Kirki and can easily modify anything in $pre_options table like theme/site wide options, custom css but current customizer doesn’t have a post_meta method or even $post object which would be awesome. Maybe we can help nudge them in the right direction?

  • +1
I’m looking for it but i didn’t see anything related ACF + Theme_Customization_API

    Any chance to do it?
