Many times I find myself in the need of creating the same field groups on different websites over and over. For example, a set of fields for a slideshow, another one for locations on the map etc. Most of the times, those groups contain the exact same fields.
To gain some time, I tried to copy the json file from one site to another and I saw that the fields seemed to be working OK.
So, my question is this: would it be OK if I created a bunch of field groups, then get their json files and use them independently on many different sites? Is there any drawback to that approach?

None. The best way to transport field groups from one site to another in ACF5 is by using the JSON files to import the groups into another site.
