Unwanted spaces in textarea field

I’m using a textarea field, set to “auto “. It’s working fine, except it’s also outputting a space. See screenshot, before “def” and “hij”. I need the ‘s for the desktop version and want to hide them on the mobile version. The problem is that the spaces are still there. Any suggestions?
