Storing Uploads in Private Directory

I have set up a site where information is uploaded and stored as uploads (PDFs) in the uploads folder. The PDFs are not sensitive, but I would not want google to index them or to have them available to someone who is not logged in (or at least not make it easy).

Is there any way to accomplish this?
