Setup custom fields in theme functions.php file

Is this possible?

Instead of using the plugins options page in the theme admin, is there a way to register the custom fields desired in functions.php – so after installing the theme and plugin, going to a create a post, the custom fields are already there ready to be utilized by posters?

Or is the only way by setting up the fields in the plugins admin options page?
