Relationship Field with default current users for new forms only

Hi,

I found this great solution: https://support.advancedcustomfields.com/forums/topic/set-current-user-as-default-in-relational-select-field/

Unfortunately, it changes the selected user for already existing submissions upon editing. Is there a way to only use the current user if no user is set?

Also the link provided in that previous support post is now 404.
