Register flexible content fields through PHP individually?

We maintain a lot of sites where we use Flexible Content fields. Each site has different fields, however we do use many fields on multiple sites.

Is it possible somehow to register each field independently through PHP, perhaps via plugins, where I can install which fields I need per site, and they’d all register to a certain flexible content field?

Or is there perhaps a better way to organize flexible content fields among different sites?
