Populate one field dynamically based on another

Hi all,

I’ve been asked if there is a way that a user writing a post can select an option in field X which will then populate field Y (which can’t be edited by the user except for changing field X). Is this possible?
I’ve had a look about using a radio button to display both fields but was unsure if there was a tidier way to approach this.
