I had the free version installed and never made use of it. Instead I purchased the single site licence and read in several places that one of the steps is to acknowledge a message to upgrade the database.
I don’t see a notice anywhere. Is it because I didn’t create any data with the free version?
There is hardly any content in the entire website because it’s just getting built up now.
i.e. can I dismiss this database step and carry on using the plugin?

I wouldn’t worry about it. If you never used ACF on the site then is shouldn’t matter. Also, I can’t tell from your comment, if you never used ACF version 4 specifically, then there will not be any update to perform. The DB update is for moving data from V4 to V5.
