Hi
How do I set up for showing a custom field in only posts, but for both administrators and contributers?
I have tried and failed – and now the fields doesn’t show at all…

If you mean that an admin can see the fields but a contributor cannot. Contributors only have permission to create new posts and edit their own posts.
When I set up these rules I can see the fields when logged in as a contributor when creating a new post.
If this is not the case for you then you may have another plugin that is altering permissions or something else going on. Try deactivating other plugins and check the contributor permissions if you have some type of role editor installed.
