imagefilter on upload images to gallery

Wondering if there is a way to get an imagefilter working on uploded files to gallery. Tried via wp_generate_attachment_metadata in function.php to manipulate a picture but it seems like the upload doesn’t “see” that. It works well if I upload a file via Media and than attach it to gallery but not if I attach it by uploding on page via geallery field.
