Database Upgrade Required – exactly which db?

  • I M attempting to upgrade from the free version to PRO, and after installing the plugin and enabling it, I get the following message

    Database Upgrade Required

Thank you for updating to Advanced Custom Fields PRO v5.3.10!
Before you start using the new awesome features, please update your database to the newest version.

…. I know that it will do this automatically, but exactly which database is upgrading and is there any risk to it breaking my site?

When is the best time to do this… In case it pulls down my site, even temporarily as it is live and I cannot afford the disruption.

  • You should always backup your database before performing updates, as it says on this page https://www.advancedcustomfields.com/resources/upgrading-v4-v5/. It will be updated all posts, postmata, usermeta, and options values associated with ACF. Also if you read the page I liked to there are some minor changed to coding that may be required, I’d read that page several times and take a look at your site code and have a good idea what you’ll need to modify before you start.

While nothing should go wrong and it should not bring your site down, there is always that possibility when performing an update. If you have things backed up then you can always revert the site to get it back to way it was.

If you try the upgrade and you can’t get it to work, submit a support ticket https://support.advancedcustomfields.com/new-ticket/

  • thanks John – I’ll give it a go tonight.

  • Hi @mancer

ACF PRO uses a different structure than the free one. The database upgrade is used to convert the old field groups to the new one. If you’re worried about your live site, you can always clone it and create a staging/development site so that you can test the upgrade. Don’t forget to backup your site and database first. This page should give you more idea about it: https://www.advancedcustomfields.com/resources/upgrading-v4-v5/.

Also, the upgrade shouldn’t take long, so you can upgrade it whenever you want.

    I hope this helps 🙂
