Custom fields in profile not editable

I’ve successfully added new custom fields for a membership site to the user registration form, with the fields copied into the user profile on the back-end profile page. However, the custom fields are not editable on the profile page, unlike the standard fields. Any help appreciated.

Exactly how did you add these fields? Please provide more detail.
