Creating a new field type with repeater?

I want to create a new field type with a set of fields I want to be able to repeat. Can I add an “Add Row”-button which, when you click on it, adds this set of fields multiple times? Just like a repeater field.

I think this would be possible, but I have been trying to think of a reason why you would want to do this instead of just adding a repeater field.

What is the use case for using a single field that includes all the functionality of a repeater field instead of just using a repeater field?
