Conflicting field submissions

I’m using a theme (Newspaper by TagDiv) that has a “post settings” metabox with a few fields to enter. I don’t want this visible to most users, except for one field in it, the name being td_subtitle. I’ve tried created a field in my own field group with that name, but entering information in it doesn’t seem to get saved … in fact, both can be saved with different values at once … did I somehow misidentify the field name I’m trying to replace or is this a complicated issue or what?
