Changing Select to Checkbox

Is it possible to simply update the type from “Select” to “Checkbox” without losing/corrupting data of previous entries in that field? The options will remain the same.

I just tested this in ACF 5.3 and the answer is yes, you can change the field type and all of the previously saved data was still there. But I’d still back up the database… just in case.
