Can't edit repeater field, [] operator not supported for strings in repeater.php

Hello,
In the edit screen I am missing some repeater fields. When I try to edit the field group by clicking the Field group from the list, the Edit Field group window opens but I can’t edit the field group or see the repeater fields.
The error I get is:
Fatal error: [] operator not supported for strings in /home/r/e/exaample/www/site/wp-content/plugins/acf-repeater/repeater.php on line 418

I have not seen this before. I did upgrade ACF recently to the latest version, so maybe that could be the reason? WP is version 3.6

I tried disabling other plugins (like W3 total cache) but that did not help. Any idea how to fix this ?

All other fields groups seem to work fine, it s just the repeater field groups that is giving this error

Took me a good part of the day to clean up the mess.

Don’t use http://wordpress.org/plugins/simple-mail-address-encoder/ if you use the repeater field plugin.
