Alert or custom validation?

I found the documentation to retrieve the errors, and the one to add stuff to the admin… but is there a hook to validate one of my own fields?

If not, is adding my own JS to the admin scripts the closes way to accomplish?

I need to remind the user that editing some field will break things and wait for confirmation.
