Add possibility to open expanded editor directly when clicking blocks

  • Hi ACF team,

When working with ACF blocks, the expanded editor often works better than having all fields cramped into the sidebar. That’s why I was a heavy user of auto mode. But when using version 3, that mode is no longer available.

Currently, I’m using the acf.hideFieldsInSidebar option in block.json to prevent users from having to use the sidebar fields, and force them to use the expanded editor instead. However, that makes them click twice before being able to edit a block: once on the block itself, and once on one of the buttons which trigger the expanded editor.

Would it be possible to add a block.json option which allows me to open the expanded editor immediately when clicking a block? I’m not sure what it should look like. I can imagine a new mode, expanded. Or a boolean flag like acf.alwaysUseExpandedEditor.

    Cheers,
    Wiegert

  • Seconding this request. We’ve invested a decent amount of time into building good UIs for the wider editor, and some of our blocks are just not editable at all in the sidebar. We’d love the ability to have the expanded editor open by default without resorting to a one-off fragile script.

    Thanks again!
