ACF Blocks vs WP Patterns

Hi folks. I’ve been away from WP for a bit and when catching up noticed that “Patterns” have been introduced to the toolkit for Guternberg, and they seem very similar to what I was previously building with ACF Blocks. Can someone explain how they’re currently approaching building templates for the block editor?
