update_field() for relationship

Is there any trick to using update_field() with a relationship field?
I am using the field_key, not the field_name, but for some reason, I am unable to set this value. Does the value need to be the uid of the related post type?

The value stored by ACF for a Relationship field is and array or post ID values.
