Sorting dropdown for custom archive

I don’t understand how I would go about implementing a dropdown menu that would sort a custom archive/loop (say alphabetically) by a custom field.

Say the custom archive listed 1000 books, and the data for the book author was in a custom field — I’d need to sort those books alphabetically by author.

Any suggestions?
