Programmatically Filling Fields from an API

Hey Everyone!
I am trying to find info about how to create a new post that contains a bunch of custom fields and load those fields with API data. Essentially I want to be able to click a button and loop through about 20 different items and pull all their info back and build posts out of them. I want to do this all programmatically but I am having trouble finding any resources! Does anyone have any experience with this that could point me in the right direction?
