Load custom icon font in Icon Picker field

The Icon Picker field comes with hooks to add custom tabs and populate them with custom icons, but the icons must be images. The custom tab takes a very long time to load if there are thousands of icons. Is there a way to load a custom icon font rather than images? I’m hoping it would greatly improve the performance.
