Include ACF in theme but display it in Plugins screen for updates

I would like to include ACF Pro in a custom theme I am building. I read the guide on how to include it in the theme and got that working. I’ve done this method before though, and run into a problem later on where my client can’t update ACF and then they get some weird behavior because they’re running an old version of ACF.

Is there any way to include the plugin with a custom theme, and still display it in the Plugins screen? Also, I noticed that the ACF Pro “Updates” screen goes away with the method in the guide above, so I would either need that back or some other way to input my pro license to get updates, I’m assuming.
