Filter category pages using ACF date field

Hi,

I am currently working on a website that displays information about upcoming company events.

I have a custom post type ‘event’, which has a custom field added using ACF ‘event date’. The custom post type ‘event’ can be assigned to categories.

I want to alter the category display so that only upcoming events are displayed. Is it possible to use ACF to alter the category query, and can any one point me to how to do this? I have been searching but can’t find a decent example I understand.
