Convert Repeater field to Gallery field

So I’m hopping on an existing client, and they are using a simple repeater field as a gallery of images. I think converting it to an actual Gallery field would be more straightforward and intuitive, but not sure how to go about it. Is there a slick method of doing this?

The repeater is set up as just 1 sub-field of “image” type, so seems like in theory it should be an easy conversion.

It’s not an easy conversions. The two types of fields are stored differently and the code to display them is completely different.
