Thanks so much – tweaked it a little:

`// load custom category:
$cat = get_field(‘trend_category’);`

went with:

$cat = get_post_meta($p->ID, "trend_category", $single);

and

echo '<h3>' . $cat . '</h3>';

went with:

echo '<h3>' . $cat_name . '</h3>';
