I have run into the same issue that values are not saved when using the Free version.
Using the Pro version (on the same installation, which is a vanilla WP install with twentyseventeen) does work.
I have used this template to create my plugin.
Everything works as expected with the Pro version but I can’t seem to hook into the acf/save_post action nor store/see any post data (with the free version active).
I tried to hook it from functions.php as well as from my custom plugin.
It seems update_value in this file is not reached.
@thelonedeveloper did you ever find a fix ?
