Without you providing any code samples I can only guess what is really happening on your site, but the following might be applicable:

$i = 0;
while( ... ) {
	if ( $i == 0 ) {
		// Do an odd row...
		$i++;
	} else {
		// Do an even row...
		$i--;
	}
}
unset( $i );
